By publishing book reviews on the web, students are encouraged to share their ideas and opinions about books in an authentic way. Our second graders learn to determine importance in text through writing summaries of their books. They learn to present ideas clearly, and then support their ideas with examples from the text. As children share their reviews, they experience the powerful magic of influencing their audience to share their own reading experience. Our reading and writing community becomes stronger as children begin to see books from the eyes of their fellow readers. As teachers, we cherish this time when we can experience the children’s excitement as they discover themselves as readers and writers.
